50 KB leaves enough room that a moderately sized photo (around 600 pixels on the long edge) reaches it without visible loss. Compress first; only resize if you are still over.
If it will not drop
- Reduce the image dimensions and compress again.
- Make sure you are exporting as JPG, not PNG, for a photograph.
Where 50 KB limits show up
Many application forms set 50 KB as the maximum for a passport-style photo, and some marketplaces and HR portals use it for profile pictures. It's also a sensible size for images inside emails and newsletters.
Take a photo that compresses well
- Use a plain, light background - busy backgrounds take up more of the file size.
- Face the light, so the photo isn't grainy; grain (noise) is hard to compress.
- Skip filters and heavy beauty effects, which forms often reject anyway.
Check before submitting
Confirm the file is a .jpg or .jpeg under 50 KB and that the face is sharp at 100% zoom. If the form also gives pixel dimensions, resize to those first.
