The square Instagram post size
The classic Instagram feed post is a 1080x1080 pixel square (1:1). Instagram also allows portrait and landscape, but square is the safe choice that always displays fully in the grid and the feed. If you upload an image that is not square, Instagram crops it - often cutting off the edges of your photo. This tool makes an exact 1080x1080 version so you control what stays in frame.
Crop to fill or fit
- Crop to fill covers the whole square and trims the overflow - best for a centred subject.
- Fit (blurred edges) keeps the whole image and fills the gaps with a soft blur - great for a tall photo you want fully visible in a square.
- Fit (colour) places the image on a solid colour, a clean look for product shots and quotes.
Tips for sharp Instagram posts
Start from an image at least 1080 pixels on each side so it stays crisp. Instagram compresses uploads, so export at full quality and avoid heavy text near the very edges. For Stories and Reels, use the 1080x1920 size instead. Everything runs on your device - your photo is never uploaded, and there is no watermark.
