What is a HEIC file?
Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. HEIC files are about half the size of a JPG of the same quality, which saves storage on the phone - but Windows, Android, many websites and older editing programs cannot open them. Converting to a common format solves that.
Why choose PNG instead of JPG?
PNG is lossless: converting your photo to PNG keeps every pixel exactly as decoded from the HEIC file, with no extra compression. That is useful when you plan to edit the image, cut out a subject, add text or graphics, or save it again several times, because PNG does not lose quality each time it is saved. Designers and people preparing images for print often prefer it for that reason.
The trade-off is size. A PNG photo is usually several times larger than a JPG. If you just want to share, upload or email a photo, the HEIC to JPG converter gives a much smaller file that looks the same.
Good to know
- Batch conversion - select several photos at once; each gets its own download button.
- Live Photos - only the still image is converted, not the short video part.
- Change the setting on your iPhone - in Settings > Camera > Formats, choose "Most Compatible" to shoot JPG from now on.
