There is a new tool for automatically removing the background from an image: upload a JPG, PNG or WebP, and the subject is cut out into a transparent PNG, with no manual tracing or selection needed.
What the tool actually does
Unlike the watermark covering tool, which works through a manual box-drag, background removal is fully automatic — the tool detects the main subject in the photo and separates it from its background on its own. The result is a PNG with a transparent background, ready to place onto a new backdrop, use as-is, or drop into another design.
Where to find it
Remove Background accepts any image; dedicated pages are also available for a specific source format — from a JPG, from a PNG, and from a WebP.
Why this was worth building
A clean product photo on a marketplace listing, a professional headshot without a distracting background, a subject cut out for a custom sticker or a piece of design work — all of these previously meant either manual editing skill or paying for someone else to do it. Automatic background removal handles the common cases directly.
Where it works best
- Product photos for marketplace listings, covered in our guide to removing the background from a product photo.
- Headshots and profile photos, covered in our guide to removing the background from a headshot.
- Subjects prepared for a custom sticker or print, covered in our guide to cutting out a subject for a custom sticker or print.
Where to expect more careful checking
Automatic cutout handles clean, solid shapes very well. Very fine, wispy detail — loose hair, thin straps, fur-like textures — is a genuinely harder case for any automatic process, and may need a small manual touch-up in a basic image editor after the initial cutout. Reflective or transparent products (glass, jewellery) are also a harder case, since the tool has less clear separation to work from.
A note on the output format
The result is always a PNG, specifically because that is what preserves the transparent background — saving or converting it to JPG afterwards will fill the transparent area with a solid colour, which is covered in detail in our guide on why a background-removed image must stay PNG.
Why automatic, rather than a manual selection tool
A deliberate choice was made to make this fully automatic rather than a manual click-and-trace tool, since tracing a subject's outline by hand is genuinely tedious and error-prone for anyone without design experience, particularly around detailed edges like hair. The trade-off is that a manual tool would, in principle, allow perfect control over every edge, while the automatic approach occasionally needs a small touch-up on the hardest cases. For the large majority of everyday photos, the automatic result is clean enough to use directly, which is the more useful default for most people most of the time.
How it fits alongside the rest of the toolset
Background removal is filed under the new Editing & Cleanup section, alongside the newly added watermark removal tool, and follows the same free, no-sign-up approach as everything else here — upload, process, download, with the file removed from the server automatically about an hour later.
How this complements the existing image tools
A background-removed cutout is often just the starting point of a larger task — resizing it to fit a marketplace listing's requirements with the Image Compressor, or combining several cutouts into one catalog document with Image to PDF. Background removal was built to sit naturally within that broader set of image tasks, rather than as a standalone feature disconnected from everything else here.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a manual tool, or does it work automatically?
Fully automatic — there is no manual selection or tracing step required.
What file formats does it accept?
JPG, PNG and WebP as input, always producing a transparent PNG as the result.
Will it work on any kind of photo?
It works well across a wide range of subjects; fine detail like hair or fur, and reflective or transparent items, are the cases most likely to need a small manual touch-up afterwards.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no account, and files are removed from the server automatically about an hour after processing.
Do I need to do anything special with the lighting or background of my source photo?
Reasonably even lighting and some contrast between the subject and its background help the automatic cutout work more cleanly, though it is not a strict requirement.
Can I use the result commercially, for a product listing or a business?
Yes, the resulting image is yours to use the same as any other file you process here.
Where can I read more about specific use cases?
Our guides on product photos, headshots, and custom sticker preparation each cover a specific use case in more detail, linked above.
