How this works
This is a real automatic cutout, not a manual crop: an image-segmentation model looks at the whole photo and separates the main subject from the background on its own. It runs entirely on our server - your image is never sent to a third-party background-removal API.
What a segmentation model actually does
Unlike a simple color-based background remover that just strips out a specific flat color like green or blue, this tool uses a genuine machine learning model trained to recognize the shape and boundary of a subject within any photo, regardless of what's behind it. The model analyzes the entire image and produces a precise mask separating subject from background pixel by pixel, which is why it works on ordinary photos with normal, unstaged backgrounds - not just photos shot against a studio green screen.
What it works best on
- A single clear subject - a person, product, animal or object - reasonably distinct from the background.
- Product photos for online listings, profile pictures, and portraits.
Where it can struggle
Fine detail like loose hair strands, fur, or a subject that blends closely into the background colour can come out with a slightly rough edge. There is no manual touch-up step in this version - if the cutout is not clean enough, try a photo with more contrast between the subject and the background.
Why this runs entirely on our own server
Many background removal tools route your photo through a third-party API, which means your image leaves our systems entirely and goes through infrastructure you have no visibility into. This tool runs the segmentation model directly on our own servers, so your photo is processed, cut out, and deleted without ever being handed off to any external service - a meaningfully stronger privacy guarantee than a tool built as a thin wrapper around someone else's API.
Who actually needs this, and why
Online sellers preparing product photos with a clean, consistent background for marketplace listings. Designers and content creators who need a quick cutout to composite a subject onto a different background without opening full photo editing software. Anyone creating a profile picture, ID photo, or presentation graphic who wants the subject isolated from its original background cleanly and automatically.
Using the result
The output is a PNG with a transparent background, ready to drop onto a different background, a white product listing, or a slide. If you need it as a JPG instead, use our Image Tools to convert it (a solid background will replace the transparency).
Privacy
Your photo is processed on our servers over an encrypted connection and deleted automatically after processing. There's no account required and no watermark added to the result.
Getting the cleanest possible cutout
While this tool handles the segmentation automatically with no manual input required, the quality of the source photo still matters: a subject photographed with reasonably even lighting, a background that genuinely differs in color or texture from the subject, and a clear, unobstructed view all give the segmentation model better information to work with. A subject wearing clothing that closely matches the background color, or a photo with harsh shadows blending subject and background together, naturally produces a less clean edge regardless of how good the underlying model is.
What happens with multiple subjects in one photo
If your photo contains more than one distinct subject - several people, or a product alongside other objects - the segmentation model generally attempts to identify and keep the most prominent subject in the frame, which may not always match what you specifically intended to isolate. For a photo where you need precise control over exactly which of several subjects gets kept, cropping the photo down to just your intended subject before running it through this tool often produces a more predictable result than relying on automatic subject selection across a busier scene.
Combining with other tools afterward
Once you have your transparent PNG cutout, it's a natural starting point for several other common tasks: placing it over a new background using photo editing software, dropping it directly into a presentation or document, or using our Replace Background tool if you want the whole process - cutout and new background together - handled in a single step instead of two separate ones.
Why the output format is always PNG
This tool always returns a PNG specifically because PNG is the only common image format with reliable, lossless support for transparency - a JPG simply has no concept of transparent pixels at all, so there's no other format that could faithfully preserve a cutout's transparent edges. If you need a different format for a specific use case, converting the PNG afterward with a dedicated format converter lets you choose exactly how the transparent areas get handled, typically filled with white or another solid color of your choosing instead of staying transparent.
Dimensions and quality stay unchanged
This tool only affects which pixels are visible versus transparent - it never resizes, recompresses, or otherwise alters your photo's actual dimensions or detail level. The subject pixels that remain visible after the cutout are exactly as sharp as they were in your original upload, since the segmentation process is purely about deciding what to keep versus remove, not about re-rendering the kept content in any way at all.
Batch processing a product catalog
If you're preparing several product photos at once for a marketplace listing, running each one through individually lets you confirm every single cutout meets your expectations, since the quality of each result depends on that specific photo's own lighting, background, and contrast rather than behaving identically across a genuinely varied batch of different source images.
A quick comparison against manual background removal
Manually tracing a subject's outline in a design tool can produce an extremely precise cutout, but it takes real time and skill per image. This automatic tool trades a small amount of that precision, particularly around very fine detail, for a result that takes seconds rather than minutes, which is the right tradeoff for the overwhelming majority of everyday product, profile, and content use cases.
