How to Compress a JPG to 20 KB

A 20 KB cap almost always means one of two things: a scanned signature, or a small passport-style photo. It is one of the tightest limits you will meet, and compression on its own will not get a phone photo there. You have to reduce the pixel dimensions as well.

The working method is: crop, resize to the pixel size the form asks for, then compress with the Image Compressor and check. If you are still over, shrink the dimensions a little more and compress again.

Why 20 KB specifically

Twenty kilobytes is small enough that it is almost never an accident — forms that ask for it are usually storing thousands or millions of these images in a database, and every extra kilobyte multiplies across every applicant. That is worth knowing because it means the number is unlikely to be negotiable through a slightly larger upload; the form will typically reject anything over the limit outright rather than warning you. Treat it as a hard ceiling rather than a rough guide, and leave a small margin — aim for 17–18 KB rather than exactly 20, so an unrelated difference in how your browser or device saves the file does not tip you over on a technicality.

Why resizing matters more than compression here

A 3000 × 4000 pixel photo contains 12 million data points. Twenty kilobytes cannot describe that many, so the compressor is forced to throw away most of the information and the result looks smeared and blocky. Shrink the same photo to 200 × 260 pixels first — about 50,000 points — and 20 KB is suddenly enough to hold a clean image.

So the pixel count does the heavy lifting; compression just fine-tunes the last few kilobytes.

Steps for a photo

  1. Crop to the framing the form wants — usually head and shoulders, plain background.
  2. Resize to the stated pixel dimensions. If the form gives only a physical size, 200 × 230 pixels is a safe starting point for a passport-style photo.

Some forms want the file between, say, 10 KB and 20 KB. If your compressed image comes out at 6 KB, it may be rejected as too small. Fix this by increasing the dimensions slightly (for example 220 × 250 instead of 200 × 230) or using a lighter compression setting so more detail — and more bytes — is kept.

The most common mistake is compressing first and resizing second, or not resizing at all. Trying to force a full-size photo down to 20 KB with compression alone means pushing the quality slider to its harshest setting, which produces visible blotching around the eyes and mouth — exactly the area a photo ID needs to be clear. University applications sometimes specify centimetres and DPI instead of pixels — a 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo at 200 DPI works out to roughly 275 × 354 pixels, which you can set directly when resizing rather than guessing. When a form gives a range rather than a single number, aim for the middle of it: comfortably under the maximum, but not so far under that fine detail is lost.

Testing before you submit

Once you have a file under 20 KB, open it at full size on your screen rather than trusting the thumbnail. A passport-style photo should still show clear, even skin tones and a readable expression; a signature should show an unbroken line with no chunks missing from thin strokes. If either looks off, go back one step in dimensions rather than one step in compression — it almost always gives a better result for the same file size.
