How to Compress an Image to 100 KB

100 KB sits in a comfortable middle ground. It is tight enough to matter — a modern phone photo can be 3–8 MB — but loose enough that most images reach it without a drastic resize. This is the target you will meet most often: portfolio thumbnails, ID uploads, product photos, and general “keep the page fast” web use.

What determines whether 100 KB is easy or hard

  • Pixel dimensions. A 4000-pixel-wide photo has to shed far more detail to hit 100 KB than a 1200-pixel-wide one.
  • Subject matter. A plain, evenly lit subject compresses better than a busy, high-contrast scene — there is simply less detail to encode.
  • Format. JPG is built for this; a PNG of the same photo can be five times larger for no visual benefit.

Where the size actually goes

JPG compression works by simplifying detail the eye is least sensitive to — small colour variations and fine texture — while keeping sharp edges intact for as long as possible. That is why a portrait against a plain wall compresses further than the same portrait against foliage: the wall has almost nothing left to simplify away, while the leaves are full of fine detail the encoder has to spend bytes describing. It is also why resizing helps more than compressing harder once you are already at a moderate setting — there is a point where the encoder has removed everything it safely can, and the only way to shed more bytes is to remove pixels, not detail within them.

Keeping quality while you shrink

  • Crop out anything irrelevant before compressing — every extra pixel of empty background costs bytes.
  • Straighten and correct exposure first; a well-lit, level photo compresses more efficiently than a dim, tilted one that then needs correcting after the fact.
  • If the photo will be viewed small (a thumbnail, an avatar), resize to roughly the display size rather than keeping full resolution and compressing hard — you get a smaller file and a sharper result at the size it is actually shown.

Batches of similar photos

If you are compressing several photos for the same purpose — a set of product shots, a gallery of scanned pages — use the same resize dimensions and compression level across all of them. This keeps the visual quality consistent from image to image, which matters more than most people expect: a gallery where every third photo is noticeably softer than its neighbours looks unfinished even if each one individually passes the 100 KB check.

Uploading a photo ID or a document photo

When the 100 KB image is a photo of a document rather than a person or a product — an ID card, a certificate, a receipt — treat it more like a scan than a photograph. Straighten it, crop tightly to the edges of the document, and increase contrast slightly if the lighting was uneven. These photos compress differently to a normal portrait because the important content is fine text rather than smooth tones, so a slightly lighter compression setting than you would use for a photo of a person often gives a more legible result at the same file size.
