Password-Protect a PDF Before You Send It

If a document holds anything personal, a password is a sensible last step before it goes out by email or chat.

Steps

  1. Upload the file to Protect PDF.
  2. Set a strong open password.
  3. Download the protected copy and share the password through a separate channel — not in the same email.

Tips

  • Keep a copy of the original unprotected file somewhere safe; if you forget the password there is no recovery.
  • A short, guessable password does not help. Use a passphrase.
  • For documents you send often, store the password in a password manager.

The upload is processed over an encrypted connection and deleted from the server about an hour later.
