Get any photo in KB, at the exact limit you need

Online forms rarely say "make it smaller" - they give a number: 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB. This tool works to that number. Enter the limit in KB, choose your photo, and it finds the highest quality that fits. If quality alone is not enough, it reduces the width and height only as much as needed, so the face or document stays as clear as possible.

Common KB limits and what they are for

  • 10 to 20 KB - signatures and thumbnail photos on exam and recruitment forms. See compress to 10 KB and 20 KB.
  • 20 to 50 KB - passport-style photos on government and university portals. See 30 KB and 50 KB.
  • 100 to 300 KB - ID proofs, certificates and scanned documents. See 100 KB, 200 KB and 300 KB.
  • 500 KB to 1 MB - visa photos, websites and email. See 500 KB and 1 MB.

Why KB and pixels are different

KB measures how much storage the file uses; pixels measure its width and height. A form may set both, for example "200 x 230 pixels, under 50 KB". If it gives pixel sizes, resize the photo to them first with Resize Image, then bring it under the KB limit here. If it only gives a KB limit, this tool is all you need.

Check before you submit

Some portals count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes instead of 1,024, so aim a little below the limit - for example 48 KB for a 50 KB cap. Open the downloaded photo once to make sure it still looks sharp and is the right way up.

How the tool actually reaches your number

Whatever KB value you type in, the process behind it is the same: first, a search for the highest JPEG quality that fits your photo's full pixel dimensions under that limit; only if nothing at full size works does the tool also reduce the pixel dimensions proportionally, then search for the best quality again at that smaller size. This means a generous target like 500 KB usually keeps your photo at its original resolution, while a tight one like 10 or 20 KB almost always needs some amount of resizing as well - the tool handles that transition automatically depending entirely on the number you enter.

Why one flexible tool beats a dozen fixed ones

Rather than needing to find and remember a different page for every specific KB number a form might ask for, this tool accepts any target from 5 KB up to 10 MB directly - type the exact number your form states, and it works to that number precisely, rather than an approximate nearby preset. This is especially useful when a form specifies an unusual or very specific limit that doesn't match one of the common round numbers other tools are built around.

Who actually needs this, and why

Anyone facing a form with a KB requirement that doesn't match a standard preset - say, a specific 35 KB or 175 KB limit - who needs a tool flexible enough to target that exact number rather than the nearest common size. Students, job applicants, and anyone navigating multiple different portals, each with its own distinct size requirement for what's fundamentally the same photo or document.

Privacy

Your photo is processed on our servers over an encrypted connection and deleted automatically after processing. There's no account required and no watermark added to the result.

JPG, PNG and WebP all supported

Whichever format your photo starts in, this tool handles it the same way, converting to JPG internally if needed since JPEG's compression approach is specifically efficient at handling photographic content in a way PNG's lossless method isn't. If your original file is already under your target in a format the tool accepts unchanged, it comes back exactly as it was.

Batch processing multiple photos to different targets

If you're preparing several photos for different forms, each with its own specific KB requirement, this tool's flexibility means you don't need to switch between different pages for each one - just change the target number between uploads, running each photo through with whatever limit its specific destination actually requires.

Starting from a good source photo

Regardless of what KB target you're aiming for, a well-lit, sharp, plainly-composed photo compresses down more cleanly than a dim, blurry, or busy one - good lighting and a simple background give the compression process genuinely better material to work with, which matters more the tighter your target gets.

Why forms specify KB limits in the first place

A file size cap usually reflects real backend constraints on the receiving system - storage limits across potentially thousands or millions of applicants, or older infrastructure that was never designed to handle today's high-resolution phone photos. Understanding that the limit serves a genuine practical purpose on the institution's end makes it easier to treat getting it exactly right as worthwhile, rather than an arbitrary inconvenience to work around.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Beyond the file size itself, a few other issues commonly cause rejections even after a photo has been correctly compressed: uploading in the wrong format when a form specifically requires JPG, submitting dimensions that don't exactly match a form's separate pixel requirement, or having the photo appear rotated incorrectly because of how the original was captured. This tool corrects orientation automatically and handles the KB target precisely, but it's still worth double-checking the form's format and dimension requirements separately, since those are distinct checks from the file size limit alone, and a form's validation system can reject a submission over any single one of them, independently of whether every other individual requirement had already been satisfied correctly ahead of time, which is why checking each one separately, rather than trusting the file size number alone, is worth the one extra minute it actually takes to do before you submit anything.
