OCR a Scanned PDF

Upload a scanned PDF or an image of a document, and get back a searchable PDF you can select, search and copy text from - plus the extracted text itself.

How it works

1

Upload a scanned PDF or an image.

2

We run OCR on every page.

3

Download a searchable PDF, or copy the text directly.

What does "searchable PDF" mean?

A scanned document is just a picture of text - a computer can't tell where the words are, so you can't select, search or copy anything from it. This tool reads the text on every page with OCR (optical character recognition) and adds it back into the PDF as an invisible layer placed exactly over the matching words in the scan. The page still looks exactly like the original scan, but now you can select, search (Ctrl/Cmd+F) and copy its text like any normal PDF.

How accurate is it?

Accuracy depends on scan quality - a clean, straight, high-resolution scan of printed text will come out close to perfect; a blurry photo, tiny handwriting, or a crooked scan will have more mistakes. Currently this tool recognizes English text.

Is this safe?

Your file is uploaded only to run the OCR and build the result - both the original upload and the output PDF are removed from our server automatically afterward.

Questions & Answers

What file types can I upload?
A PDF (scanned or image-based), or a single image - JPG, PNG or WEBP.
Is there a page limit?
Yes, up to 15 pages per PDF for now, since OCR takes real processing time per page.
Can it read handwriting?
It's built for printed text. Handwriting recognition is much less reliable and results will vary a lot.
Does this change what the page looks like?
No. The page image is kept exactly as scanned - the recognized text is added as an invisible layer on top, not shown, only selectable.
Is my document kept after processing?
No. Both the uploaded file and the output PDF are removed from our server automatically after a short period.
