Why add a watermark?

A watermark is a quick way to mark a document as a draft, confidential, or as the property of your business before you share it further than you'd like it to travel. A diagonal "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DRAFT" stamp, or a faint logo repeated on every page, discourages a document from being passed off as final or as someone else's work, without getting in the way of reading it.

Text or logo, your choice

Use plain text for the classic diagonal stamp look, or upload your company logo to brand every page instead. You can also combine both. Everything is processed on our server and the files are removed automatically afterward - we don't keep copies of your documents.

Why opacity matters so much for a usable watermark

A watermark set too dark or too opaque competes directly with the document's actual content for the reader's attention, making the underlying text or images genuinely harder to read - defeating the point of a watermark, which is meant to mark the document without interfering with its primary purpose. The default 30% opacity strikes a deliberate balance: visible enough to be noticed and to deter misuse, faint enough that the real content underneath stays completely legible. Raising it further makes sense when you specifically want the watermark to be unmissable, such as a large "SAMPLE" stamp meant to prevent a preview document from being used as a final one.

Choosing rotation and position

A diagonal watermark, typically rotated across the page at an angle, is the traditional convention for a reason: it's visually distinct from normal horizontal page content, making it immediately obvious that the stamp is an overlay rather than part of the document's actual text. Position matters too - a watermark centered across the page is hardest to simply crop out of a photographed or printed copy, while a corner-positioned logo reads more like consistent branding than a protective stamp.

Who actually needs this, and why

Businesses marking draft contracts or proposals as not-yet-final before internal review and approval. Photographers and designers adding a logo watermark to preview documents shared with clients before final payment and delivery. Anyone sharing a confidential or sensitive document who wants a visible deterrent against it being passed along or presented as something other than what it actually is.

Privacy

Your document is processed on our servers over an encrypted connection and deleted automatically after processing. There's no account required and no additional branding added beyond the watermark you've chosen to apply yourself.

Why a consistent watermark applies to every page

Watermarking every page with the same text, logo, position, and styling rather than letting it vary ensures the protection is uniform throughout the document - a watermark on only some pages would leave the others looking like they came from a different, unmarked source, undermining the whole point of marking the document consistently in the first place.

Choosing a watermark colour that works for your document

A lighter colour at the default low opacity tends to blend more naturally with typical white or light-background documents, while a darker colour can stand out more distinctly against lighter page backgrounds even at the same opacity setting. If your document has colored backgrounds or images across different pages, it's worth checking that your chosen watermark colour remains visible against the most visually complex pages, not just the plainest ones.

Text watermark versus logo watermark

A text watermark like "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DRAFT" communicates its message immediately and unambiguously to anyone viewing the document, regardless of whether they recognize your specific branding. A logo watermark instead reinforces brand ownership and professional presentation, which suits situations where establishing whose document this is matters more than broadcasting a specific warning message. Combining both lets you communicate ownership and status together on the same page.

Checking your result before sharing

After watermarking, it's worth opening a few pages - particularly ones with dense text or images - to confirm the watermark sits where you expect and that the underlying content remains comfortably readable at your chosen opacity. This quick check takes a moment and ensures the balance between visible deterrent and readable document actually landed where you intended.

A watermark versus other document protections

It's worth knowing a watermark is a visual deterrent, not a security measure - it doesn't restrict who can open, copy, or edit the file the way a password would. If you need genuine access control on top of the visual marking, our Protect PDF tool can add real AES-256 password encryption to the watermarked document as a separate step, combining both protections for a document that genuinely needs more than just a visible marker alone.

Removing a watermark later

If you ever need to remove a watermark you've added - say, once a draft becomes final - that's a different process from adding one, since this tool stamps new content onto the page rather than tracking it as a removable layer. Our Remove Watermark tool handles that separate task, letting you mark and cover the stamped area afterward if that later becomes necessary.

Batch watermarking several documents

If you need to apply the same watermark - identical text, logo, opacity, and position - across several different documents, running each one through individually with the same settings keeps the branding or protection genuinely consistent across your whole batch, rather than risking slight, inconsistent variation between files that were each processed with slightly different settings.

A watermark that survives printing and photographing

Since the watermark is stamped directly into the PDF's page content rather than added as some separate metadata layer, it survives printing the document, photographing a printed copy, or converting the file to a different format - the mark is now a genuine part of each page's actual visual content, which is exactly the kind of durability a deterrent watermark needs to actually be effective against someone trying to strip it out or otherwise work around it entirely by any other practical means available.

Questions & Answers

Can I add both a text and a logo watermark at once?
Yes. Fill in the watermark text and upload a logo image, and both will be applied to every page.
Will the watermark cover up my document's content?
The opacity is low by default (30%) so the underlying text and images stay readable. You can lower it further, or raise it if you want the watermark to stand out more.
Does the watermark get added to every page?
Yes, the watermark is stamped on every page of the PDF, using the same text/logo, position and styling throughout.
Is my file kept after processing?
No. Both the uploaded PDF and the watermarked copy are removed from our server automatically after a short period.
