Change the background behind your subject

Replacing a background means cutting the main subject out of a photo and putting it on something new - a clean colour for a profile or product shot, or a different scene entirely. This tool does both steps for you: an automatic cut-out that follows the edges of the subject, then a composite onto the background you pick. You do not need any editing skills or software.

Two kinds of background

  • Solid colour - choose any colour for a clean, even backdrop. White, light grey and blue are the usual choices for profile pictures, CVs and product listings.
  • Your own image - upload a photo to use as the background, and the subject is placed on top, scaled to cover it.

How the cut-out works

The background is removed by a machine-learning model that runs on our own server - there is no third-party service, so your photo is not sent anywhere else. "Standard" quality gives the cleanest edges, especially around hair; "Faster" is quicker and lighter. The subject keeps its real edges and is composited at full resolution onto the new background, and the result downloads as a JPG.

Standard versus Faster: which to choose

These two settings represent a genuine tradeoff between processing time and edge quality, not just a cosmetic label difference. Standard runs the full segmentation model and typically produces noticeably cleaner results around fine detail like hair strands or fur, which matters most for portraits and close-up product shots where that detail is clearly visible. Faster trades some of that edge precision for quicker processing, which works well for simpler subjects with cleaner outlines - a product with hard edges, an object photographed against a plain background - where the extra precision Standard offers wouldn't be visible in the final result anyway.

Why the subject keeps its original resolution

Unlike some simpler background-swap tools that downscale the subject to match a lower-resolution background or template, this tool composites your subject at its full original resolution onto whatever new background you've chosen, so the sharpness of your original photo carries through completely intact into the final result.

Who actually needs this, and why

Job seekers and professionals creating a clean, consistent profile photo on a plain background for a resume or LinkedIn profile. Online sellers placing product photos onto a clean white or branded background for marketplace listings. Anyone wanting to composite a subject onto a new scene entirely - a different setting, a branded backdrop, a creative background - without needing to learn photo editing software.

Tips for the best result

A clear difference between the subject and the original background gives the cleanest cut-out, so good, even lighting helps. For product shots, shoot against a plain wall first. If you only need the subject on a transparent background (no new background), use our Remove Background tool instead. Uploaded and generated files are deleted from the server automatically.

Privacy

Your photo is processed on our servers over an encrypted connection and deleted automatically after processing. There's no account required and no watermark added to the result.

Choosing a solid color that works for your purpose

White remains the most universally accepted background color for formal use cases like resumes, ID-style photos, and many marketplace listing requirements, since it's the safest default when you're not certain what a specific destination expects. Light grey offers a slightly softer look that still reads as clean and professional. Blue is a traditional choice for some official ID and passport-style photos specifically, though requirements vary by country and purpose, so it's worth checking the specific destination's stated requirement before committing to a particular color.

Using your own background image effectively

When uploading a custom background image, choosing one with a reasonably simple, uncluttered composition in the area where your subject will sit tends to produce a more convincing final composite than a background with its own competing subject matter or complex detail right where your subject gets placed. Since the subject is scaled to cover the background image's frame, starting with a background image at a similar aspect ratio to your subject photo generally avoids excessive cropping of either one.

What happens with imperfect lighting or contrast

If your original photo has the subject and background sharing similar colors or tones, the segmentation model has less visual information to distinguish between them, which can produce a rougher cutout edge regardless of which quality setting you choose. In that situation, trying the Standard setting specifically, which applies more careful edge processing, often helps more than adjusting any other setting in the tool.

Why the output downloads as a JPG

Once your subject is composited onto a new, fully opaque background, there's no remaining transparency to preserve - the entire image, subject and background together, is now a complete, solid photo, which is exactly the kind of content JPG handles efficiently. This is different from the plain Remove Background tool, whose output stays as PNG specifically because it still has transparent areas that genuinely need to be preserved for later use elsewhere.

Batch processing several photos

If you're replacing backgrounds for several photos at once - a set of product shots, a few profile photos - running each one through individually and checking the result lets you confirm the quality setting and background choice actually suit that specific photo, since different source photos can behave quite differently under the same automatic cutout process depending on their own lighting and contrast.

A quick check after processing

Before relying on the result for something important - a job application photo, a live product listing - it's worth zooming in on the edge between subject and background, particularly around hair, fur, or any fine detail, to confirm the composite looks convincing at the size you'll actually be viewing or displaying it at. A rough edge that's barely visible at normal viewing size matters far less than one that's genuinely noticeable, so judge the result practically rather than at maximum zoom.

Questions & Answers

Can I use my own background image?
Yes. Choose "Background image" and upload any JPG, PNG or WebP; your subject is placed on it, scaled to cover the frame.
Is my photo sent to another company?
No. The cut-out runs on our own server with an offline model - your photo is not sent to any third-party service, and files are deleted automatically.
What if I just want a transparent background?
Use the Remove Background tool, which returns a transparent PNG. This tool is for putting the subject on a new background.
Is it free?
Yes, free with no sign-up and no watermark.
